Congratulations to Mines’ Lori Tunstall, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering on her recent NSF award, “Decarbonizing the cement and concrete industry through ex-situ CO2 mineralization and high-level clinker substitution with sustainably sourced biochar and mining waste,connected to a Nexus seed award she won in 2020, with NREL’s M. Brennan Pecha (past, Senior Researcher in biomass, renewable energy and materials science) on recycling of carbon-sequestering char to synergistically enhance the life of concrete. Dr. Tunstall set to work on the project in June 2023, and will continue work through February 2025.
