The focus on sustainability, the energy transition, and the future of the earth and environment provides unique opportunities in leading-edge graduate research through the collaborative, interdisciplinary programs available at Mines.

The Mines/NLR Relationship and access to National Labs

Mines and NLR are located ~2 miles apart in Golden, Colorado and have a large number of graduate students that are co-advised by Mines faculty and NLR scientists and engineers who get to work on high-profile research projects using state-of-the-art facilities. Mines and NLR have also formed the Mines/NLR Nexus Initiative which encompasses shared facilities, joint appointments, joint projects, shared interdisciplinary educational programs in addition to the co-advised students. Mines is known globally for the signature student experience provided at the University, and for the quality and value of Mines research and scholarship.

Students working within the Mines/NLR Nexus also have access to the large number of other national laboratories in the Front Range including the US Geological Survey (USGS) (on-campus) and the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) (~18 miles) that also have extensive interactions with Mines. The Mines/NLR Nexus Initiative, for example, with the National Laboratory of the Rockies.
