Mines’ Provost Holz recently announced an award for a joint appointee of Mines and NREL, Kathryn (Katie) Johnson, Professor of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Johnson has been awarded a Ben L. Fryrear Endowed Chair for Innovation and Excellence to drive institutional change at Colorado School of Mines.

The Fryrear Chair is a 3-year position supplementing Katie’s existing position, to implement an initiative that will help Mines. Katie wrote a proposal for “Macroethics for Sustainability” to build a community of faculty interested in that topic for their teaching and research.

It can also complement many NREL activities, both across research areas but also connected to NREL’s work in Energy Justice. Katie said she’ll “definitely be keeping in touch with my NREL colleagues on relevant topics as I move forward with the program, just starting it now”.

Endowed by Mines alum Ben Fryrear ‘62 in 2017, the chair recognizes and supports highly accomplished Mines faculty members working to further the vision and mission of the university, for a term of three years.

Dr. Johnson, who holds a joint appointment at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), plans to focus her Fryrear term on macroethics for sustainability by creating a supportive community of Mines faculty incorporating both into their teaching and research.

Congratulations to Katie Johnson, Professor and Mines-NREL Joint Appointee, on this prestigious award!
