Coleman Eschenbrenner, Ethan Dorman, Glori Erichson and Landon Wood, along with their teacher advisor, BHS Science Teacher Susie Dykstra, won the competition with their MESA USA Designing for Equity project, “Fighting Hunger One Click at a Time: Building an App to Serve Our Local Food Bank”.
The team had the highest combined scores in the four major categories of the competition; Design Brief, Poster Presentation, Technical Interview and Prototype Pitch. They will go on to represent Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region at the national MESA USA competition, June 26-29, in Albuquerque, NM.

Judges gave notable praise to the winners for the amount of preparation and professionalism that went into their final presentation.

The competition was part of the larger Rocky Mountain MESA Jamboree, a STEM-focused event, which had about 85 high school students and their teachers come together, with Mines graduate student mentors, volunteers, chaperones and judges.

Judges included esteemed Mines faculty, scientists from NREL, East Daley Analytics, the Critical Materials Institute (CMI), and Rocket Lab, as well as industry experts from Lockheed Martin, the US Navy and CACI International.

It was a fun day to be on campus! Beautiful weather and an energized community of STEM advocates filled three floors of the CoorsTek Building. Along with the competition, the Jamboree included a showcase of work by non-competing RM MESA teams, an engineering expo put on by Mines students, resources, simulations and experiences brought in by the Mines library and Mines student groups. There were vendor resources and recruiters from the Mines Admissions department, food, swag and an environment of celebration and hard work!

Congratulations to Broomfield High School’s Coleman, Ethan, Glori and Landon – good luck at Nationals next month! See below for the full list of results.
